After splitting with Okoboji on Saturday, the Spirit Lake Indians traveled to Storm Lake Tuesday night for a basketball doubleheader with the Tornadoes and came away with two wins
The Spirit Lake girls jumped out to an early 17-2 lead in the first quarter and didn't look back. The Indians led 32-6 at the half, 51-8 after three, and 60-14 at the final buzzer. Joie Veldman led the way for Spirit Lake with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Bailee Newman and Emma Dau each added 11. Spirit Lake advanced to 10-3 this season and 6-1 in the Lakes Conference.
In the boys contest, Spirit Lake got off to a bit of a slow start and Storm Lake jumped out to a 4-0 lead. By the end of the first quarter, however, the Indians led 21-10. Defensively, the Indians had a tough time keeping Storm Lake sophomore Parker Lange at bay, particularly in the second quarter. The Tornadoes closed the gap to 33-27 at half, thanks to Lange's 22 points. The Indians adjusted at halftime and held Lange to just 6 in the second half as they rolled to the 74-47 win. Ryan Kriener led the Indians in scoring with 25 points. Alex Henrickson also dropped in 22. The Indians are now 11-1 with a 6-1 conference record.
The Indians travel to Cherokee on Friday night for a doubleheader against the Braves. The Indians swept Cherokee at home on December 12th with the girls coming back to win 48-47 and the boys cruising to the 88-33 victory. Coverage on KUOO begins at 6pm on Friday.
