Fri 1-16-2015
Spirit Lake hadn't beat Le Mars in a boys basketball game since 2008, but that losing streak came to an end Friday night. The Spirit Lake boys knocked off the Bulldogs by a final of 62-53 and the girls took down Le Mars 59-51.
In the girls matchup, Le Mars pounced early, leading 8-4 early in the game, but by the end of the first quarter, Spirit Lake had nabbed a 12-8 advantage. A 7-0 run to start the second quarter helped the Indians jump out to a 30-17 halftime lead. Le Mars outscored Spirit Lake 34-29 in the second half, but it wasn't enough, as the Indians held off the late charge to claim the victory. Emma Dau led all scorers with 19 points and Bailee Newman added 16. Holly Schneider and Kassidy Rieken combined for 33 points for Le Mars.
On the boys side, it was a close, back-and-forth battle all evening. Spirit Lake led 10-9 after one, 20-19 at half, and 37-36 after the third quarter, before pulling away in the fourth quarter. Alec Henrickson had an outstanding night, putting up 26 points, 14 of which were from the free throw line unofficially. Billy Brown added 14 and Ryan Kriener scored 12 points before fouling out. Trenton Hillbrands led Le Mars with 17 points.
Spirit Lake is at Okoboji Saturday evening and the games can be heard on KUOO beginning at 6pm.
