Spirit Lake Suffers 1st Loss Of Season
LeMars beat Spirit Lake 40-12 to open district play in Class 3A, District 1. The Indians first three possessions of the game each resulted in an interception by Silas Buss. Dawson Ahrenstorff also had an interception on the Bulldogs first possession of the game. LeMars would strike first with a 17 yard touchdown catch by Tyson Weiler and after a successful two point conversion, the Bulldogs led 8-0 with 6:28 to go in the first quarter. Spirit Lake threatened late in the first quarter but saw the drive stall on the LeMars 18 yard line. In the second quarter, Kyle Kliever had a 48 yard touchdown catch and the Bulldogs extended their lead to 16-0. Spirit Lake got on the board midway through the second thanks to a 25 yard touchdown catch by Brock Tvedte. The extra point missed and it was 16-6. LeMars punted on the following possession but two plays later got a 27 yard interception return for a touchdown by Cody Franck. The missed two point conversion made it 22-6. Spirit Lake would score late in the quarter off a 16 yard touchdown run by Nick Christenson to cut the lead to 22-12 at halftime. The third quarter was all LeMars. The Bulldogs opened with a 25 yard touchdown catch by Collin Nemmers. They then recovered the kickoff and eight plays later, Weiler caught a four yard touchdown pass. Spirit Lake's only possession in the third quarter resulted in an interception and the Bulldogs led 34-12 to enter the final quarter. A 31 yard touchdown catch by Justin Allaway would be the only score of the fourth quarter for either team and give LeMars the 40-12 win.
Gabe Eckstein was 18-for-35 for 273 yards passing for the Bulldogs with five touchdowns to one interception. Kliever had four catches for 91 yards and a touchdown catch. Buss had three interceptions for LeMars, who is 3-0 (1-0 District). The Bulldogs are at Sergeant Bluff-Lufton on Friday. Matthew Moody had 19 carries for 93 yards for Spirit Lake. The Indians had 249 yards of total offense compared to 377 for LeMars. Spirit Lake is now 2-1 (0-1 District). They host Spencer on Friday. Hear the game on KUOO.
