Spirit Lake Softball Advances To State!
Spirit Lake Softball is on to the state tournament with a thrilling 3-2 win over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in the Class 3A Region 1 Softball Final on Monday night. The Indians got two runs in the top of the fourth. They got a walk by Hannah Poolman, a single by Izzy Backhaus and then an RBI ground out from Jordyn Hamm and an RBI sacrifice bunt from Emily Alger. In the bottom of the fourth, Brooke Zylstra hit a solo shot to left field to cut the lead to 2-1. The Indians answered with a run in the top of the fifth. Brooke Harrington reached on an error and scored off an RBI single from Peyton Ahrenstorff. The Nighthawks got another solo home run by Zylstra with one out in the sixth. They would get runners at second and third but saw the tying run get thrown out at the plate and the inning end on a fly ball to center field. BHRV threatened again in the bottom of the seventh with runners at first and third, but the Indians held on to punch their ticket to Fort Dodge. Ahrenstorff was 1-for-4 with an RBI for Spirit Lake. Izzy Backhaus was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Hannah Poolman was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Jordyn Hamm and Emily Alger each had RBIs for the Indians. Kelsey Kannenberg got the win in the center circle. She pitched all seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits. She struck out four and walked four. The Indians are 28-7. They are the seven seed in the Class 3A State Softball Tournament and will face number two seed Albia (31-4) at 11am on Tuesday, July 17th in Fort Dodge. Brooke Zylstra was 3-for-4 with two solo home runs, two RBI, and two runs scored for the Nighthawks. Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag took the loss for BHRV. She gave up three runs on four hits, striking out six and walking three. The Nighthawks impressive 2018 campaign ends at 31-3.
