Spirit Lake Softball Advances to Regional Final

Spirit Lake took on Cherokee Friday night in a 3A Regional Semifinal and the Indians earned a 6-2 victory. Spirit Lake scored 1 run in the top of the first to jump on the board first but the Braves answered back with a 1-run homer by Kaely Hummel to tie the game. In the second, an RBI single by Paige Petersen brought Josie Fagen home, giving the Indians a 2-1 lead. Petersen then scored thanks to a Bailee Newman RBI single. After two innings, the Indians led 3-1. A run by Mackenzie Thate in the fifth gave the Indians a 4-1 lead. Cherokee closed the gap to 4-2 in the fifth before the Indians added two more runs in the top of the 7th. Down 6-2, Cherokee wasn't able to mount a late charge thanks to three straight fly-outs to end the game. The 6-2 victory has earned Spirit Lake a date with Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley Monday night in Sheldon with a trip to state on the line. KUOO will have coverage beginning around 6:45.
The Indians scored 6 runs on 5 hits while committing just 1 error and leaving 9 runners stranded on base. Bailey Newman earned the win on the mound, pitching all 7 innings. She struck out 8, walked 2, and gave up 2 earned runs on 2 hits. Paige Petersen went 1-for-4 with the go-ahead RBI single in the second inning and a run scored. She also made a couple of outstanding catches at the center field fence. Mackenzie Thate was 0-for-2 with 2 runs scored after reaching on 2 walks and a Cherokee error. Newman, Caitlyn Roberts, and Josie Fagen also scored 1 run each for the Indians.
The Braves' 2 runs came on 2 hits while committing 4 errors and leaving 3 runners on base. Freshman pitcher Lindsay Williams went the distance for Cherokee, striking out 5 and walking 5, while giving up 6 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits. Kaely Hummel finished 1-for-3 with a home run. Emily Haselhoff finished 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Cherokee's season ends with a 19-14 record while Spirit Lake seeks back-to-back State appearances. The Indians are now 31-6 and play Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in Sheldon Monday night.
