Spirit Lake Outlasts Estherville In Week 1 Football
Spirit Lake beat Estherville-Lincoln Central 33-21 on Friday night. The Indians struck first with 8:38 to go in the first off a three yard touchdown run by Matthew Moody. The extra point was no good and Spirit Lake led 6-0. ELC went three and out on their first possession and Spirit Lake added to their lead. This time it was a 54 yard touchdown catch by Dawson Ahrenstorff. The extra point was good and the Indians led 13-0 with 2:10 to play in the first. The Midgets got on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a 21 yard touchdown catch by Trey Jacobsen but missed the extra point to cut the lead to 13-6 with 9:04 to go in the first half. Later, Robert Sheridan scored from one yard out to cut the lead to 13-12 after another missed extra point. Spirit Lake would respond with a 73 yard touchdown catch by Ahrenstorff and the extra point made it 20-12. The Indians led 26-12 at halftime after another late touchdown catch. The Indians led off the third quarter with a 55 yard touchdown run by Nick Christenson to go up 33-12 after the extra point. ELC got a 43 yard touchdown catch by Jacobsen in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 33-19 with 9:47 to go. Spirit Lake gave up a safety with :14 to go.
Ahrenstorff finished with three catches for 136 yards for Spirit Lake and two touchdowns. He had two interceptions on defense. Moody had 16 carries for 109 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Christenson was 11-for-26 passing for 270 yards. He threw three touchdown passes and ran one in as well. Spirit Lake had 449 yards of total offense.
