Spirit Lake Loses Close Game To Heelan
Bishop Heelan held off Spirit Lake 8-3 in a defensive battle in Class 3A District 1 football. The Crusaders would get their only score off a 27 yard touchdown run by Saybein Clark with 3:45 to go in the first half. Spirit Lake got their only score as the first half expired when Ben Steffens made a 53 yard field goal and set a new school record. In the fourth, the Indians would drive to the Crusaders four yard line but were unable to punch it in, securing the victory for Bishop Heelan. Clark had 27 carries for 100 yards for Heelan before leaving the game in the second half with an injury. The Crusaders are 7-2 (5-2 District) and will qualify for the playoffs due to a Spencer loss at Algona in overtime. For Spirit Lake, Nick Christensen was 18-for-36 for 173 yards and an interception. Alex Van Dyke had six catches for 76 yards. The Indians finish their season at 5-4 (3-4 District). They bid farewell to 16 seniors.
