Spirit Lake Football With Tough Loss at SB-L
Sergeant Bluff-Luton edged Spirit Lake 19-18 in Class 3A District 1 Football on Friday Night. The Indians struck first in the second quarter with a 10 yard touchdown catch by Alex Van Dyke. After a missed extra point it was 6-0 Spirit Lake. Later in the quarter, a fumble recovery by Dakota Powell at the Warriors 10 yard line led to a 22 yard field goal by Ben Steffens to make it a 9-0 Indians lead. Two players later, SBL cut the lead to 9-6 with a 55 yard touchdown run by Zach Shultz. As time expired in the first half, Steffens made another 22 yard field goal to put Spirit Lake up 12-6 at halftime. The score stayed that way until midway through the fourth quarter when Britton Delperdang put the Warriors up 13-12 off a two yard touchdown run. The Indians responded right away with a 97 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Matthew Moody to retake the lead at 18-13. The Warriors on the ensuing drive retook the lead for good with a 28 yard touchdown catch by Connor Groves to get the final score of 19-18. Spirit Lake had fourth and 10 from the Warriors 20 yard line and scored a touchdown with less than a minute to go but was penalized for holding. SBL intercepted the next pass to seal the win. The Warriors finished with 369 yard of total offense to Spirit Lake's 180. The Indians fall to 5-3 (3-3 District). They finish out their season next week at Bishop Heelan. SBL is now 7-1 (5-1 District) and will play for a district title next Friday in Storm Lake.
