Spirit Lake Football Wins Road Contest At Algona
Spirit Lake overcame a slow first quarter and ran away from Algona with a 55-14 win in Class 3A District 1 football. The Indians scored first off a 36 yard touchdown run by Brock Tvedte. The two point conversion was missed. Algona responded with a 14 yard touchdown run by Jacob Durant and made the extra point to take a 7-6 lead. The score stayed the same to start the second quarter. Spirit Lake retook the lead off a 77 yard touchdown catch and run by Frankie Ramos and the Indians led 13-7. Later Nick Christensen added a 31 yard touchdown run and Matthew Moody ran it in from seven yards out. After a successful two point conversion, Spirit Lake led 28-7 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Bulldogs got a 35 yard touchdown run by Skylar Groen to make it 28-14, but Algona would not get any closer. The Indians scored four more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Ramos had a 10 yard touchdown catch. Moody had a four yard touchdown run. Alex Van Dyke caught a 14 yard touchdown pass and Elijah Griffin picked up a fumble and ran it back 78 yards for a touchdown to end the game. Spirit Lake had 473 yards of offense in the game compared to the Bulldog's 323 yards. Christensen was 13-for-23 for 272 yards passing. Ramos had five receptions for 129 yards. Durant had 27 carries for 117 yards to pace Algona. The Bulldogs are still looking for their first win and travel to Sergeant Bluff-Lufton on Friday.
