Spirit Lake Football Defeats Estherville 49-20
Spirit Lake scored on their first seven drives en route to a 49-20 victory over Estherville-Lincoln Central in Class 2A Playoff football on Monday night. The Indians got on the board :50 into the game when Logan Backhaus found pay dirt from five yards out. Spirit Lake led 7-0 after the extra point. After an ELC punt, the Indians needed just :36 seconds to score again as Cory Meschede caught a 67 yard touchdown pass. The two point conversion was no good and the Indians led 13-0. Facing a fourth and long on their next possession, the Midgets elected to punt but the kick was blocked into the end zone for a safety, extending Spirit Lake’s lead to 15-0. After the free kick, Spirit Lake used the short field and Matthew Moody scored on a two yard touchdown run with 4:40 to play in the first quarter. The extra point extended the score to 22-0. Spirit Lake also scored on a 36 yard touchdown catch by Billy Brown and a 49 yard touchdown run by Backhaus to lead 35-0 after one quarter. In the second quarter, Houston Hawkins had a 22 yard touchdown run and Backhaus added a 24 yard touchdown to stretch the lead to 49-0 with 8:10 to go before halftime. ELC got on the board with 1:28 before halftime as Dan Christenson ran it in from 32 yards out. At halftime, it was 49-7 Indians. ELC added a one yard touchdown run by Jacob Heinrichs and a one yard touchdown run by Robert Sheridan in the second half.
Spirit Lake had 583 yards of total offense. Backhaus had five carries for 85 yards. He was also 4-for-4 with 176 yards passing. Tyler Jenness had four carries for 79 yards with Matthew Moodie adding eight carries for 78 yards. Meschede had two catches for 101 yards. The Indians are 11-0 and play on Friday night against Central Lyon/George Little Rock. Hear the game on KUOO. ELC’s Dan Christenson had four catches for 108 yards. Myles McDonald had 21 rushes for 64 yards. The Midgets season ends at 4-7.
