Spirit Lake Football Beats Estherville

Spirit Lake's Billy Brown threw a 55 yard touchdown pass to Cory Meschede on the first play of the game and the Indians ran away with a 49-18 win over Estherville-Lincoln Central on Friday night in non-district football. The Indians scored two possession later on a 43 yard touchdown run by Tyler Jenness to extend the lead to 14-0 with 4:43 left in the first quarter. On their next possession, Spirit Lake capped off an eight play drive with a six yard touchdown run by Logan Backhaus and the lead stretched to 21-0. Brown then intercepted a pass at the ELC 31 yard line and two plays later, Dallas Poock scored from 15 yards out to make the lead 28-0. The Indians scored twice in the second quarter. Backhaus reached pay dirt on a 55 yard run and Will Hall caught a 68 yard touchdown pass. In the second half, the Midgets got a 45 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Trey Jacobsen, a four yard touchdown run by Evan Olesen, and a 1 yard touchdown run by Briar Rowley. Spirit Lake's Gavin DeVos caught a 28 yard touchdown in the second half.
Offensively for Spirit Lake, Backhaus was 11-for-18 with 136 yards passing with a touchdown. He rushed for 120 yards with a touchdown. Meschede had four catches for 89 yards. The Indians had 531 yards of total offense and start the year 1-0. Next up for Spirit Lake is Forest City at home on Friday. The game will be on KUOO.
ELC had 215 yards of total offense. Myles McDonald had seven carries for 60 yards. Briar Rowley had five carries for 51 yards. Dan Christenson had three catches for 70 yards. The Midgets are 0-1 and travel to Algona on Friday.
