Spirit Lake Falls Short Of State Tourney Bid
Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come from behind and defeat Spirit Lake 6-2 in the Class 3A Region 2 Final on Monday night. The Indians struck right away in the top of the first off a double from Karli Olsen. She later scored off a sacrifice fly by Josie Fagan to put Spirit Lake up 1-0. Fagan added another run for the Indians in the top of the fourth with solo shot to right. The Indians maintained the lead until the sixth when the Nighthawks scored their six runs on two hits, three walks, and two Spirit Lake errors. BH/RV would hold on in the seventh to punch their ticket to the state softball tournament in Fort Dodge next week. Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag got the win on the mound. She pitched all seven innings, giving up two runs on four hits. She fanned nine batters, walked five, and hit one. Joanne Luevano was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI for the Nighthawks. Erica Pottebaum had a hit and two RBI for BHRV, who improves to 32-2. Fagan led the Indians at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a run scored off the solo homer and two RBI. Olsen was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a run scored. Kelsey Kannenberg took the loss on the mound. She pitched all six innings, giving up six runs on two hits. She struck out six and walked five. The Indians season ends at 26-9. They were champions of the Lakes Conference for the fourth season in a row with a 12-2 conference record. They graduate five seniors: Fagan, Maddie Richter, Olivia Peschon, Hannah Brumley, and Kailee Jenness.
