Spirit Lake edges Algona in a thriller

Spirit Lake edged Algona 50-48 in Girls Class 3A Region 1 semifinal basketball on Wednesday night. The Indians led 16-13 after one quarter, but the Bulldogs got hot from beyond the arc and the Indians' offense went silent in the second quarter to give Algona a 27-20 halftime lead. In the third quarter Spirit Lake cut the lead to 33-31 to enter the final stanza. In the fourth quarter, the lead went back and forth with both teams tied up at 48 with less than a minute to go. Anna Brown was fouled and made both free throws and the Bulldogs were unable to get a shot off with :09 to go, securing the win for the Indians. Joie Veldman led Spirit Lake with 13 points. Brown finished with 12 points while Bailee Newman and Paige Peterson each finished with 10. The Indians are 16-7 and will play in a regional final in Sheldon on Saturday night against Sioux Center. The Warriors defeated MOC-Floyd Valley 63-45 to advance. Hear the game on KUOO. Sami Grein led Algona with a game high 18 points. The Bulldogs hit 10 three pointers in the contest. Their season ends at 13-10.
