Spirit Lake Boys Win Thriller Over LeMars In Overtime
A big second quarter propelled LeMars to a 63-38 win over Spirit Lake on Friday night. A low scoring defensive first quarter resulted in a 12-4 Bulldog lead after one. Then LeMars got hot from the three point line, extending their lead to 35-15 by halftime. Spirit Lake would cut the lead to 12 midway through the third quarter but then went cold offensively and trailed 49-31 after three quarters. The Bulldogs hit eight three pointers in the contest including four from Madison Dreckman. She led all scorers with 23 in the contest. LeMars is now 16-3 (11-2 Lakes Conference). Spirit Lake was led by Anna Brown's 20 points. The Indians are now 10-9 (5-8 Lakes Conference). They host Pocahontas Area/Laurens-Marathon on Monday in a makeup non-conference game.
Spirit Lake snuck by LeMars 69-67 in overtime on Friday night. The Bulldogs led 14-13 after one quarter. In the second, the two teams traded leads with LeMars using a late run and Indians turnovers to take a 36-30 lead into halftime. Spirit Lake would trim the lead to 50-48 after three quarters. Baskets were hard to come by in the fourth quarter with LeMars holding a 57-56 lead with less than a minute to go. The Bulldogs would turn the basketball over and Andrew Van Dyke would give Spirit Lake the lead at 58-57 with :15 left. LeMars missed two shots on the ensuing possession but the ball went out of bounds off Spirit Lake with :02 on the clock. Jacob Thompson would get the ball on the in bounds play and was fouled while shooting from beyond the three point line as time expired. He made one of three free throws to force overtime. In the overtime period, the Indians made their free throws and held on for the two point win. Van Dyke led all scorers for Spirit Lake with 24 points. Owen Coburn added 20 points for Spirit Lake who improves to 15-3 (10-3 Lakes Conference). The Indians host Storm Lake on Tuesday. Hear the game on KUOO. Thompson led the Bulldogs with 17 points.
