Spirit Lake Boys Basketball Lose Substate Game Against LeMars

LeMars ended Spirit Lake's boys basketball season on Monday with a 76-65 win over the Indians in a Class 3A Substate game in Orange City. The Bulldogs took the lead on a last second three to go up 13-11 after one. They stretched their lead to 32-25 at halftime. After getting down by 12 early in the third quarter, the Indians went on a run to cut the lead to two, but the Bulldogs would lead 49-43 after three quarters. Spirit Lake made several three pointers in the final period, but LeMars made enough free throws and took care of the basketball to preserve the win. With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 20-4 and now move on to the state basketball tournament next week. LeMars got 21 points from Trenton Hillbrands, 20 points from Tyler Borchers, and five three pointers from Mitch Sitzmann. Spirit Lake was led by Billy Brown's 22 points. He had six from beyond the arch. Alec Henrickson also had six treys with 20 points overall. Ryan Kriener added 16 points for the Indians, whose season ends at 20-4. Spirit Lake graduates five seniors: Trevor Smith, Alex Prignitz, Alec Henrickson, AJ Schultes, and Trevor Jensen. Spirit Lake lost twice to Western Christian and twice (1 regular season, 1 substate) to LeMars for their 4 losses.
