Spirit Lake Boys Basketball Gets 1st Win Over Western
Western Christian blew open a close game against Spirit Lake in the third quarter and cruised to a 64-31 victory. The Wolfpack led 11-4 after one quarter and 27-18 at halftime. In the third quarter, Spirit Lake cut the lead to six early on, but then struggled against Western Christian's pressure defense and fell behind 51-27 entering the fourth quarter. Ashtyn Veerbeek led the Wolfpack with 19 points. Erika Feenstra added 17 and Western improved to 3-1 (2-0 Lakes Conference). Spirit Lake was paced by Anna Brown's 11 points. Spirit Lake upset Western Christian 64-59 to claim the Indians' first ever win against the Wolfpack in boys varsity basketball. Western Christian was ranked first in Class 2A in the first Associated Press Boys Basketball Rankings released this past Monday. The Indians led 16-10 after one quarter and grew the lead to 27-20 at halftime. In the third quarter, Western Christian would overcome the deficit and lead by as much as four before Spirit Lake would force a tie at 40 to start the fourth quarter. In the final period, the Indians outscored the Wolfpack 19-14 to earn the victory. Coburn led Spirit Lake with 30 points and 11 rebounds. He was 10-for-12 from the free throw line. Alex Van Dyke had 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. The Indians are 4-0 (2-0 Lakes Conference). They play at Estherville-Lincoln Central on Tuesday. Hear the game on KUOO.
