Spirit Lake Basketball Travels To Okoboji

Girls Game

The 2-A #15 Okoboji Pioneers defeated rival 3-A #4 Spirit Lake on Saturday night 37-34 in a hard fought defensive battle.  Spirit Lake jumped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead but Okoboji would battle back to trim the lead to 23-19 at the half.  The third quarter was a see-saw affair that saw the Pioneers take a 29-28 lead into the final stanza.  The Indians would recapture the lead at 33-28 before Okoboji would battle back and take a 34-33 lead on a basket by Emily Wintz.  Spirit Lake would answer with a bucket by Emma Dau to take a 35-34 lead but the Pioneers would answer right back with a huge three point play by Molly Mitchell to take a 37-35 lead.  Okoboji would get a key stop and then run out the clock for the win.  The Pioneers were lead by Molly Mitchell’s 14 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks; Megan Peschong added 10 points 16 rebounds and 2 assists, Emily Wintz added 6 points and Olivia Albright had 4 steals on the night.  Okoboji improves to 11-2 on the season and will play at Sheldon on Tuesday.   Emma Dau led all scorers with 16 for the Indians. Boys Game

 

Spirit Lake was able to hold off a second half comeback attempt by Okoboji and pick up a 68-59 win in non-conference boys basketball on Saturday night in Milford.  Spirit Lake led 16-11 after one quarter and stretched the lead to 37-21 at halftime.  In the third quarter, Spirit Lake stretched the lead to 21 at 44-23 but Okoboji then scored 17 unanswered points to trim the lead to four.  It was 45-40 after three quarters.  Spirit Lake made enough free throws down the stretch to come away with their tenth victory of the season.  Ryan Kriener had 25 points for the Indians, Billy Brown 18, Alec Henrickson added 15 while Trevor Smith chipped in 10.  Spirit Lake is 10-1 (5-1 Lakes).  They are at Storm Lake on Tuesday in a game you can hear on KUOO.  Tyler Stumbo led all scorers for Okoboji with 33 and was a key part to the Pioneers comeback attempt as he scored 20 in the second half.  Houston Hawkins added 11 for Okoboji, who falls to 4-8 (3-7 Siouxland).  The Pioneers are at Sheldon on Tuesday.
