Spirit Lake Basketball Travels To LeMars & Splits The Games
A cold first and fourth quarters proved costly for Class 3A fifth ranked Spirit Lake on Friday night as the Indians fell at LeMars 42-34. The Bulldogs led 10-5 after one quarter. Spirit Lake's offense got going in the second quarter, and the Indians took the lead 21-17 at halftime. Spirit Lake led 28-25 after three quarters but could only get six points in the final period compared to 17 for LeMars. Anna Brown led the Indians with 12 points. Spirit Lake is 7-2 (4-2 Lakes) and is in Cedar Rapids to face Epworth, Western Dubuque on Saturday. LeMars was led by Cassidy Utesch's 14 points. The Bulldogs are now 5-5 (3-3 Lakes).
Spirit Lake survived a second half surge by LeMars and the Indians picked up a 74-61 win at LeMars on Friday night. LeMars led 21-19 after the first quarter. Spirit Lake used a big second quarter to pull ahead 40-29 at halftime. In the third quarter, the lead stretched to 16 before the Bulldogs clawed their way back and cut the lead to seven off three point shooting. The Indians responded and extended the lead back to 15 and held on for the win. Billy Brown led all scorers with 30 for Spirit Lake. Ryan Kriener had 19 points and 16 rebounds while Jake Heitritter had 16 for the Indians, who are 8-2 (5-1 Lakes). The Indians play against Sioux City North in the CNOS Classic on Saturday. LeMars was led by Trenton Hillbrands's 27 points. The Bulldogs are 4-5 (3-3 Lakes).
