Spirit Lake Basketball Takes Season Sweep Over Spencer
Spirit Lake overcame an early deficit to beat Spencer 65-52 on Monday night at the Field House. The Indians trailed 14-12 after one quarter. In the second quarter, the Indians defense stepped up the pressure and outscored the Tigers 21-14 to take a 33-28 lead into the break. The Indians led 53-40 going into the final period. Turnovers were an issue for the Tigers with 27 in the contest compared to 12 for the Indians. Spirit Lake got 18 points from Bailey Newman, 16 points from Anna Brown, and 15 points from Joey Veldman. The Indians are 12-7 (8-4 Lakes Conference). They will host LeMars on Friday. Hear the game on KUOO. For Spencer, Keeley Petzenhauser had a game high 22 points and was 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. Ally Schlaeger added 19 including six three pointers for the Tigers, who fall to 11-6 (7-5 Lakes Conference). The Tigers host Cherokee on Friday.
A back-and-forth game went Spirit Lake's way in Spencer on Monday night as the Indians edged the Tigers 63-58. The two teams were tied at nine after one quarter, tied at 21 at halftime, and Spirit Lake led 44-43 after three. In the fourth quarter, the Tigers build a one point lead with less than two minutes to go, but a couple of late turnovers allowed the Indians to get to the line and seal the win. Billy Brown had an excellent offensive performance for Spirit Lake, scoring 38 points and going over the 1,000 point mark for his career. Ryan Kriener overcame first half foul trouble to add 17 points and went 5-for-5 from the free throw line. The Indians are 15-3 (10-2 Lakes Conference) and host LeMars on Friday. Spencer had three players in double figures. Jake Kluender had 16 points. Blake Illig had 15 while Preston Funderburg had 14. Spencer hosts Cherokee on Friday and is 12-5 (7-5 Lakes Conference).
