Spirit Lake Basketball Sweeps Storm Lake Tuesday Feb. 7
Spirit Lake held off a pesky Storm Lake team for a 50-39 win in Lakes Conference Girls Basketball on Tuesday night. The Indians held an 11-7 lead after one quarter and stretched things out to a 25-17 lead at halftime. The Tornadoes kept things close in the second half with the Indians leading 38-30 after three. Spirit Lake made enough free throws down the stretch to earn an eleven point win on Senior Night. Anna Brown and Macy Smith each had 13 points for Spirit Lake. The Indians finish the regular season at 11-10 (6-8 Lakes Conference). They play at MOC-Floyd Valley to open up Class 3A Regional play on Saturday night. We'll have coverage on KUOO after Hawkeye basketball. Storm Lake falls to 3-18 (2-13 Lakes Conference). The Tornadoes were led by Nya Molout's 10 points off the bench.
Another good defensive performance combined with three players in double figures led Spirit Lake to a 75-59 win over Storm Lake on Tuesday night. The Indians led 13-9 after one quarter and stretched things to a 32-22 lead at the break. Storm Lake would cut the lead to two early in the third quarter but still trail 49-42 to enter the final quarter. The Indians outscored the Tornadoes 26-17 in the final frame to seal the victory. Alex Van Dyke led Spirit Lake with 21 points. Frankie Ramos and JP Walz each had 19 points. The Indians were 20-for-22 at the charity stripe and hit seven three pointers in the contest. Spirit Lake is now 16-3 (11-3 Lakes Conference). They travel to Sioux City West on Friday. Storm Lake got a game high 23 points from Josh Werge, who had seven three pointers in the contest himself. The Tornadoes are 12-6 (9-5 Lakes Conference). They travel to South Central Calhoun on Thursday.
