Spirit Lake Basketball Splits With Cherokee
A battle of two top 10 ranked teams went the way of Class 3A ninth ranked Cherokee on Tuesday night as the Braves defeated the visiting Spirit Lake Indians (Class 3A fifth ranked) 72-61. The Braves led 11-6 after one quarter and stretched the lead to double digits in the second quarter. Spirit Lake cut the lead to 30-25 at halftime. The Indians went on a 10-0 run to start the third quarter, but saw the Braves come back and lead 56-44 after three. Spirit Lake could get no closer than eight in the fourth quarter and fell by 11. Kaely Hummel led Cherokee with 18 points. Olivia Dagel added 14 for the Braves, who are 2-0 (1-0 Lakes). Spirit Lake got 17 from Anna Brown. Joie Veldman added 13 for the Indians. Spirit Lake's 21 turnovers were a factor in the game as the Braves were able to get some transition buckets. The Indians are 1-1 (0-1 Lakes). They host Western Christian on Friday night. Cherokee hung around for a little over a quarter but Spirit Lake used a deeper bench to pull away from Cherokee and win 80-46 on the road Tuesday night. The Indians led 20-12 after one quarter and 43-22 at halftime. The lead was 65-36 after three quarters. Billy Brown led all scorers with 23 for Spirit Lake including five three pointers. Ryan Kriener had 21 points and JP Walz added 10 for the Indians, who improve to 2-1 (1-0 Lakes). They will face Western Christian on Friday. Hear the game on KUOO. Cherokee got 17 from Eric Peterson.
