Spirit Lake Basketball Opens Up Conference Season Against Cherokee
A third-quarter scoring drought proved costly for the Spirit Lake Indians on Tuesday night as Cherokee doubled their lead and held on to win 71-55. It was close after the first quarter with the Braves leading 19 to 17. Cherokee would extend that lead to 39-31 at half time. The Indians struggled to score for the first three minutes of the third quarter and would trail 60-44 after three. In the fourth quarter Spirit Lake would have a nice comeback and only trail by 10 at one point but Cherokee would close out the win. Payton Slaughter had 20 points for the Braves. Paityn Hagberg added 17 as Cherokee improves to 2-0 (1-0 Lakes Conference). Anna Brown had 20 for the Indians. Macy Smith had 16 for Spirit Lake who falls to 3-1 (0-1 Lakes Conference). Spirit Lake held off a lake surge by Cherokee to win 51-45 on Tuesday night. The Indians led 10 to 5 after one quarter and 22-19 at half time. The Spirit Lake lead would grow to 42-26 after three thanks to improved three point shooting, but Cherokee would mount a comeback in the fourth quarter. Some missed layups and poor free throw shooting proved costly for the Braves though and Spirit Lake held on for the win. Owen Coburn led all scorers with 17 for Spirit Lake. He had nine rebounds.
