Spirit Lake Baseball Falls in District Final

Spirit Lake's baseball season came to a close Monday night at the hands of the Spencer Tigers in the 3A District 2 Final by a final of 5-2. Spirit Lake struck first with two runs in the top of the third inning. Spencer closed the gap to 2-1 after scoring in the bottom of the third. Spencer added two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings while holding Spirit Lake scoreless through the last four innings to earn the 5-2 victory.
Spirit Lake's 2 runs came on 4 hits and 2 errors while they left 8 runners stranded on base. Logan Backhaus pitched the whole game for the Indians, giving up 5 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and he struck out 4 batters. The Indians' 2 runs came by Tony Eckert and Gavin DeVos in the third. Keaton Leach, Logan Backhaus, DeVos, and Nick Christensen each had 1 hit on the night.
Spencer scored 5 runs on 5 hits and 2 errors while leaving 5 on base. Brady Kluender started for the Tigers, pitching 2 and 2/3 innings. He gave up 2 unearned runs on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 2. Brady Plueger earned the win, pitching the final 4 and 1/3 innings, holding Spirit Lake scoreless the rest of the way on just 2 hits. He struck out 5 and walked 2. Offensively, Brady Kluender finished 1-for-2 with 2 runs scored. Chase Habben was 1-for-3 with 3 RBI and his lone hit turned Spencer's 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead. Luke Petersen finished 1-for-3 with a double, RBI, and a run scored. Cooper Fox was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Sam Polaschek also scored a run for Spencer.
Spirit Lake finishes with a 24-8 record while Spencer advances to 22-6 and will play Sgt. Bluff-Luton Wednesday in a Substate matchup in LeMars.
