Spirit Lake Baseball Defeats BHRV in District Opener

Spirit Lake defeated Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 13-3 in 6 innings Friday night in the 3A District 2 opener hosted by Spencer. The Indians scored one run in the second inning, ten in the third, and one each in the fourth and sixth. The Indians had no home runs during the regular season but knocked 3 out of the park just in the third inning. All three Nighthawk runs came in the top of the fifth, including a 2-run home run.
Spirit Lake's 13 runs came on 16 hits and 3 Nighthawk errors while leaving 5 base runners stranded on base. Gavin DeVos pitched all six inning, giving up 6 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), 1 walk, 1 hit batter, and struck out six. Offensively, Tony Eckert had a fabulous night for the Indians, going 3-for-4 with 2 home runs (both in the 3rd inning) and 3 RBI. Logan Backhaus finished 2-for-4 with a 2 RBI home run and a triple. Jeremiah Eldridge went 3-for-4 and scored 4 runs.
Bryce Van Beek started on the mound for the Nighthawks and pitched 2 and 2/3 innings. Mitchell Kiekevers pitched the next 2 and 1/3 innings and David Van Egdom pitched in the sixth inning. Van Beek was credited with the loss. Combined, they allowed 13 runs (11 earned) and struck out two batters (both by Van Beek). Wyatt Cannegieter's 2 RBI homer in the fifth inning closed the gap to 9 runs, extending the game to the sixth inning. David Van Egdom and Shane Solberg each scored one run.
The Indians are now 24-7 and will once again travel to Spencer for the District Final Monday night at 7:00 against Spencer, who defeated Storm Lake 16-0 in their district opener. The game will be broadcast on KUOO.
The Nighthawks finished the season with a 16-15 record.
