Spirit Lake Advances To Substate
The Spirit Lake boys basketball team is heading to a substate Monday after beating Storm Lake 68-62 on Thursday night in Storm Lake. The Indians got off to a fast start on the road by leading Storm Lake 27-11 after the first quarter. The Tornadoes responded in the second quarter outscoring Spirit Lake 18-6 and Spirit Lake led by just 4 points at the half. The third quarter was all Spirit Lake as they pushed their led to 11 entering the final frame. Storm Lake would go on a run and eventually tie it up at 53. It would be back and forth after that but in the end Spirit Lake hit enough free throws to seal the win by six and advance in the postseason. Spirit Lake was 7-9 at the line in the fourth quarter.
The Indians had three players in double figures. They were Owen Coburn with 19, Creighton Moricsh with 16 and Kip Hurd with 15 points. Storm Lake had four players in double figures led by Mach Nyaw with 24 points.
Spirit Lake improves to 11-12 and will take on Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Monday at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City for the right to go state. Storm Lake finishes the season with a record of 14-7.
