Spencer Iowa Wrestler Austin Roberts Collapses At Spencer Invite
Austin Roberts, a 220 pound 18 year old senior at Spencer High School, collapsed at the Spencer Wrestling Invitational Saturday and later passed away at Spencer Hospital. This is a statement according to a release being distributed by the Clay County Medical Examiner:
Due to the recent tragic death of Austin Roberts, Clay County medical examiner Dr. David Robison has turned the case over to the state medical examiner’s office.
According to Dr. Robison, preliminary investigation points to a natural cause of death. An autopsy and laboratory analysis will be performed to determine the official cause of death. Once determined, results of the investigation will be released to the family. Austin passed away Saturday evening December 19.
Spencer Schools superintendent, Terry Hemann, says a service for Austin Roberts has not been set yet. Spencer High School has outside counselors on hand for all students and staff Monday and Tuesday. Hemann says community members have been bringing in food and water for the students Monday while they go through grief counseling. Both boys and girls home basketball games set for Monday night have been canceled due to the death of Austin Roberts.
Austin finished in 8th place at the 2015 state wrestling tournament in Class 2A. This year he was ranked #6 in Class 3A at 220 pounds.
