Spencer Football Doubles Up Spirit Lake

Spencer ran away from Spirit Lake and picked up a 26-13 win in Class 3A
District 1 Football on Friday Night. The Tigers got on the board on the
second play of the game thanks to a 65 yard touchdown run by Cade
Hopkins. Spirit Lake tied the game at 7 all with 31 seconds left in the
first quarter off a six yard touchdown catch by Frankie Ramos. Spencer
took advantage of short fields late in the first half and scored on a
three yard touchdown run by Brendan Ellis and a 35 yard touchdown run by
Cooper Fox to lead 20-7 at halftime. In the third quarter, Spirit Lake
used an uptempo offense and a 17 yard touchdown catch by Alex Van Dyke
to cut the lead to 20-13. The Tigers would answer right back with a six
yard touchdown run by Hopkins to go up 26-13. The Tigers as a team
rushed for 340 yards. Hopkins had 15 carries for 119 yards. Fox had 14
carries for 94 yards. Ellis had 12 carries for 84 yards. Griffin Garnatz
had an interception. Spencer is now 3-1 (1-1 District). They go to
Sergeant Bluff-Luton next Friday. Nick Christensen was 12-for-24 passing
for 194 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception. Spirit Lake
falls to 3-1 (1-1 District). They host Algona next week. Hear the game
