Sheldon Boys Basketball Holds Off Okoboji
The Pioneers hosted Sheldon in their home opener Friday night. The Orabs jumped out to a hot start after the first quarter with a 17-3 score. The Pioneers worked to put up more points in the 2nd quarter, but Sheldon held onto their lead as the half ended 34-17. The third quarter saw a good effort from both teams and ended 52-31. The game ended with a final score of 63-44. Logan Abrahamson led the Pioneers with 16 points while Jamison Helmers contributed 10 and Kyle Martin 6. The Orabs were very balanced in their scoring attack with Van Marea scroing 17, Cain with 14, and Boerhave with 13.
Sheldon's length, size, and athleticism made it difficult for us to work the ball inside the 3 point line early on in the game, while they were pretty physical with us inside offensively. They are a very experienced and balanced team and that showed tonight. Once we were able to settle in a little bit, I was proud with our aggressiveness and the way we played, particularly in the second half. We showed a competitive spirit throughout the game that I believe we can build off of. I was happy with how our kids stuck together tonight and fought all the way through the game. I think they were really good examples in that regard for those watching the game. We have had a challenging week against a couple very good teams, but this level of competition is making us better. We are optimistic about learning from these games to grow as a team and continue to improve.
