Okoboji Girls Basketball Still Perfect; Boys Drop A Close One

The 5th ranked Class 2A Okoboji Pioneers won a hard fought game at Boyden-Hull on Friday night 62-45. The Pioneers would jump out to a 9-2 lead and hold an 11-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Boyden-Hull would hit 10-12 from the free throw line to trim the lead to 24-20 at the half. Okoboji came out strong in the second half behind some key three pointers by Megan Peschong and strong inside play by Molly Mitchell to open up a 41-30 lead at the end of the third quarter. Shaelyn Adams and Brooklyn Barnett hit three pointers in the fourth quarter to open up Okoboji’s largest lead of the game at 22 in the fourth quarter. Megan Peschong led Okoboji with 24 points on 9-10 shooting while also grabbing 5 rebounds and handing out 5 assists; Molly Mitchell had 16 points and 7 rebounds to go along with 4 blocks while Emily Wintz chipped in with 7 points and Brenna McCabe had 5 assists with 4 steals. Okoboji improves to 18-0 on the season and 15-0 in the Siouxland Conference. The Pioneers will host MOC-Floyd Valley on Tuesday night, which will also be Senior Night for the 11 Pioneer seniors.

 

 

Boys Game

 

Okoboji gave Class 2A number two ranked Boyden-Hull all they could handle, but the Comets overcame foul trouble to pick up an 81-76 Siouxland Conference win on Friday night.  Okoboji jumped out to an early lead and led 22-18 after one quarter.  The Pioneers gave up the lead in the second quarter but fought back and led 42-39 at halftime, thanks to strong three point shooting.  In the third quarter, Okoboji went cold offensively and allowed the Comets to build a nine point lead.  A couple key late shots allowed the Pioneers to stay close at 61-57 entering the fourth quarter.  With the Comets in foul trouble, Okoboji got as close as three in the final stanza but ultimately fell short.  Alex Heller led all scorers with 32 for Okoboji.  He hit four treys in the contest.  Bryce Peter had 15 points while Brandon Svoboda came off the bench and added 11.  Okoboji as a team hit 11 three pointers and was 12-for-16 at the charity stripe.  The Pioneers are 4-13 (2-12 Siouxland Conference).  They host MOC-Floyd Valley on Tuesday.  Hear the contest on Q102.  Boyden-Hull was led by Kyle Bakker's 19 points.  The Comets are 15-2 (12-2 Siouxland Conference).
