Okoboji Girls Basketball Knock Off Ranked West Lyon
Okoboji knocked off #11 West Lyon 65-64 in overtime on Friday night. West Lyon rushed out to a 9-0 lead before the Pioneers bounced back to cut the lead to 13-11 at the end of the first quarter. Freshman Magan Christopherson kept Okoboji in the game in the second quarter with four three pointers, but West Lyon stayed hot and took a 30-24 lead into halftime. The Pioneers kept clawing back in the third quarter behind hot shooting from junior Alli Goehring and would take a 42-40 lead into the final stanza. Okoboji would open a 49-41 lead before West Lyon would rally to tie the game at 54 and force overtime. The overtime was back and forth with neither team getting up by more than 3 points; Junior Grace Wintz hit a shot to put Okoboji up 63-62 but West Lyon would answer with a basket from Jessica Meyer. The Wildcats would get a stop on the next possession but the Pioneers would force a turnover with :18 left. Wintz had a great pass to freshman Camry Jones who finished the play to give Okoboji a 65-64 lead with :08 left. West Lyon’s 3-pointer with :02 left bounced off the rim and the Pioneers corralled the rebound to seal the win. Okoboji was led by Christopherson’s 25 points on six 3-pointers, Goehring added 15 points on five 3-pointers and 6 rebounds, while freshman Kallyn Stumbo had a monster floor game with 14 points, 14 assists, 6 steals and 5 rebounds. West Lyon was led by Meyer’s 24 points. Okoboji improves to 8-5 on the season and 5-5 in the Siouxland Conference while West Lyon falls to 11-2 and 9-2 in the Siouxland. The Pioneers will host Boyden-Hull on Tuesday night.
