Okoboji Girls Basketball Advances To Regional Final
The #5 Okoboji Pioneers pulled out a 56-50 Regional Semi-final win over North Union on Friday night in Milford. Both teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter, with North Union taking a 12-11 lead into the second quarter. The Warriors would go on an 11-2 run to take a 23-13 lead on a 3 pointer by Samantha Hagedorn mid-way through the 2nd stanza but Okoboji would rally in the final minutes of the frame and go on a 10-2 run and cut the lead to 25-23 at the break. The third quarter was a defensive struggle, as both teams would only score 9 points and North Union would take a 34-32 lead into the fourth quarter. Brooklyn Barnett and Cory Hoffman would hit 3-pointers in the final quarter to give the Pioneers a 40-38 lead but the Warriors would not go away and would tie the game at 40 before Emily Wintz put Okoboji ahead for good with two free throws with 4:00 remaining. Okoboji would push the lead to 49-43 on free throws by Barnett but North Union would cut the lead to 52-50 on a 3-pointer by Hagedorn with :15 left. Wintz would hit two clutch free throws to push the lead to 54-50 and Okoboji got a big defensive stop to seal the victory. Wintz had a huge game for Okoboji, scoring 23 points while grabbing 11 rebounds and handing out 3 assists; Megan Peschong added another double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to go along with 3 assists and 2 blocks; Molly Mitchell added 8 rebounds on the night. North Union was led by Hagedorn’s 18 points while Sara Rolling added 17 points. The Warriors end their impressive season at 18-5. Okoboji improves to 22-1 on the season and will play Grundy Center in a Region Final on Monday in Clarion at 7:00 PM on Q 102. The winner will advance to state!
