Okoboji Girls Basketball Advance To State!
The #5 Okoboji Pioneers edged #14 Grundy Center 40-34 on Tuesday night in Clarion to earn their first ever trip to the State Tournament.
The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead early in the game, and would take a 10-7 lead into the 2nd quarter. The Spartans would answer in the 2nd quarter as the Pioneers battled foul trouble and trailed 22-19 at the break. The third quarter was back and forth with neither team taking a lead larger than 3, but the Okoboji would reclaim the lead at 29-26 entering the final frame. A huge three-pointer by Brooklyn Barnett and then a big time jumper by Brenna McCabe would give Okoboji a 35-32 lead that they would never give up. Clutch free throws by Emily Wintz and Megan Peschong and two big blocks by Molly Mitchell would ice the game away and send the Pioneers to Des Moines.
Peschong led Okoboji with 11 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to go along with 3 assists; Wintz also scored 11 points and snared 7 rebounds; Shaelyn Adams scored 8 points to go along with 4 rebounds and Mitchell had a huge defensive night with 12 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. Hailey Wallis led Grundy Center with 13 points. The Spartans end their season with a 22-2 record. Okoboji improves to 23-1 and will battle Pekin on Monday night at 6:45 in Wells Fargo Arena on Q 102.
