Girls Game

The 6th ranked 2A Okoboji Pioneers remained unbeaten on the season with a hard fought 34-33 road victory over county rival #7 3A Spirit Lake on Saturday night.  The Indians jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Okoboji struggled on offense, but the Pioneers would close the quarter on a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 7-5 at the end of the 1st quarter.  The offensive struggles continued in the 2nd quarter as Spirit Lake’s defense caused the Pioneers to slow down and the Indians would open up a 21-13 lead at the break.  Okoboji would pick things up in the 3rd quarter as 5 straight points by Megan Peschong to start the half got the Pioneers back in the game.  The rest of the quarter was back and forth and Spirit Lake would cling to a 26-25 lead entering the final quarter.  The 4th quarter was full of drama as the Pioneers would open up a 4 point lead behind a lay-up and then a later free throw by Emily Wintz, but Bailee Newman would score 5 straight points to give Spirit Lake a 33-32 lead with just under a minute to go.  Peschong would answer for Okoboji as she drove into the lane and would put-back her own miss to give the Pioneers a 34-33 lead.  Okoboji would get two key stops on defense in the last :30 to hang on for their second straight victory over the Indians.  Peschong knotted another double-double on the night with 14 points and 10 rebounds to go along with 4 steals; Emily Wintz added 10 points with 6 rebounds and 2 assists; while Molly Mitchell added 8 rebounds.  Macy Smith and Newman led Spirit Lake with 10 points.  The Pioneers improve to 14-0 on the season and will get back into Siouxland Conference play, where they are 11-0 and in first place, on Tuesday night at home vs. Sheldon on Q 102.  Spirit Lake drops to 9-4 and will host Cherokee Tuesday on KUOO.
