Girls Game

The Okoboji Girls finished their regular season with a 50-32 victory at George-Little Rock on Tuesday night.  Both offenses struggled in the first quarter to score points as Okoboji led just 3-2 after 4:00 but the Pioneers would go on an 8-4 run to end the quarter and take an 11-7 lead into the second quarter.  The Pioneers would keep the defensive pressure up in the second quarter and hold the Mustangs to just two points as they built the lead 23-9 at the intermission.  Ali Goehring hit two three-pointers in the third quarter to open things up a bit for Okoboji and they would take a 38-22 lead in the final quarter.  The Pioneers would build the lead to 20 before G-LR trimmed it to 14 but it was too little too late for the Mustangs as Okoboji never let it get any closer.  Goehring led Okoboji with 13 points; Magan Christopherson added 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals and Kallyn Stumbo had 10 points, 10 rebounds 5 steals and 7 assists.  After starting the season at 2-3 the Pioneers finish 17-4 overall and 13-4 and in sole possession of the rugged Siouxland Conference.

Comments From Coach Adams

“We really got after it on the defensive end tonight, which definitely helped us get this win as struggled at times on offense with turnovers and missed some shots we normally hit. I was proud of how we didn’t let the offensive end of the court affect us on defense. Ali Goehring hit some big shots for us all night and also guarded really well. Magan and Kallyn also had solid games on both ends of the court. We’re excited to have a couple days to really focus on our team and get ready for Regionals next Tuesday.  We are extremely proud of how this group of 16 girls stuck together all season and kept improving every day while always putting the WE before ME. To start off slower than we hoped and then to win 15 of 16 shows just how together this team is and the potential we have.  ”

Comments From Coach Stumbo

We thought our guys put forth a really good effort tonight against a very lengthy and athletic George-Little Rock team. Their defensive pressure forced us into some turnovers early on that put us in a bit of a hole, but we were proud of how our guys responded and played aggressive throughout the entire game. It was another game where we improved in a lot of areas compared to the first time we played them. We look forward to carrying over some of the positives of this one into our final regular season game on Friday.
