Okoboji Basketball Splits with Boyden Hull

Okoboji hosted Boyden Hull Friday night and the Pioneer girls picked up a 56-48 win and the boys fell to the Comets 82-67.

Girls Game

Boyden Hull has struggled this season, but they looked ready to upset Okoboji, especially in the second quarter. After slow starts for both teams, the first quarter ended in an 8-8 tie. The Comets got off to a great start in the second, building a double digit lead before Okoboji cut that lead to 4 at the half, 25-21. It was all Okoboji in the third, as they began the half on a 14-0 run. The Pioneers entered the fourth quarter with a 44-32 advantage. The Comets tried mounting a comeback, but Okoboji held on for the 56-48 victory. Megan Peschong led the team with 14 points, all in the second half. The Pioneers advanced to 15-3 and will play at MOC-FV Tuesday night.

Boys Game

Okoboji looked poised to snap Boyden Hull's 8 game winning streak early on, by jumping out to a 7-0 lead. As quickly as they built that lead, however, the Comets came roaring back to take an 8-7 lead and eventually closed out the first quarter with a 30-16 lead over Okoboji. Tyler Stumbo and Holt Hunziker led the Pioneers in a huge second quarter, as they outscored Boyden Hull 22-8 to tie it at 38 by halftime. The third quarter belonged to the Comets as they jumped out to a 59-48 lead. In the fourth, Okoboji pulled to within 5 with a few minutes left, but they couldn't get any closer. Boyden Hull pulled away in the final minutes to pick up their 9th straight win, 82-67 over Okoboji. Stumbo led all scorers with 35 points and Holt Hunziker added 14 for Okoboji. Chandler Brunsting dropped in 22 for the Comets. The Pioneers fell to 6-11 and travel to MOC-FV on Tuesday.
