Laker men 20th in preseason poll
COLORADO SPRINGS - Iowa Lakes Community College is one of three Region XI men's basketball teams that appear in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II preseason men's basketball ratings.
The Lakers are ranked 20th, while Kirkwood is fifth and Southwestern sixth. Pima (Ariz.) is ranked first.
ILCC will open its season at home vs. the Northwestern College JV at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Last season, Iowa Lakes went 23-9 overall and 9-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference to finish in second place.
The Lakers return three players from that team.
Solomon Clayton (Fort Dodge) was an honorable mention all-Region XI selection, averaging 10.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
Also, Jacob Rau (Waukee) averaged 10 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, while Ryan Girardi (Adelaide, South Australia) averaged 4.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.
Iowa Lakes will open up the regular season by hosting the Northwestern College JV at 7:30 p.m. at Laker Gymnasium.
The Lakers open their 14-game Iowa Community College Conference schedule on Dec. 5 vs. Little Priest Tribal College in Winnebago, Neb. The first home conference game will be Dec. 8 vs. Ellsworth.
Troy Larson is entering his 12th season as head coach at ILCC and has an overall record of 231-117. He's the Lakers to one national tournament appearance (2013 season), three regional tournament final appearances (2013, 2014, 2016) and two ICCAC regular-season championships (2013, 2016).

There are two ICCAC women's basketball teams ranked, with Kirkwood second and NIACC 10th.
