Kriener signs with Slovenian team
DOMZALE, Slovenia - Spirit Lake graduate and former Iowa Hawkeye Ryan Kriener has signed a contract with the Helios Suns of the Premier A Slovenian League.
"For a child from a small town in Iowa, signing a professional contract is a dream come true," Kriener said in a statement. "I am excited to come to Slovenia and to the Helios Suns and meet new teammates as soon as possible. With hard work, we will definitely have a successful season."
He is one of the four new additions this season for Helios, who have won the Slovenian national championship in 2007 and 2016.
As a senior at Iowa last season, he played 18.3 minutes per game, averaging 7.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
"Ryan was our first choice among foreign senior basketball players and we are happy that we managed to bring him to Domžale," head coach Dejan Jakar said. "We have received a huge amount of positive information from various American coaches and scouts who have been following him for a long time. I am sure that he will quickly fit into the new environment and the way of playing in Europe."
Kriener is one of two Americans on the roster. The other is center John Florveus of Georgia.
