INDIANOLA - The Iowa Lakes Community College women's golf team had a strong team effort in placing first at the Simpson Fall Invite at Indianola Country Club.

The Lakers posted a team score of 353 to win by nine strokes over Waldorf.

Sophomore Kelly Winter (Maquoketa Valley) led the charge with a runner-up finish individually with an 82 and freshman Gretchen Hofstad (Emmetsburg) was close behind with a third-place finish at 85.

"Between the tough playing conditions and the course layout, it was an absolute grind today and I could not be more proud of the way our ladies fought,” said coach Jarvis Weber. “Kelly played extremely well today and it is great to see her find success with all of the hard work she has been putting in, and Gretchen continued her great play this fall with another top five finish. Hopefully these two can continue to be a solid one-two punch for the rest of the year and lead this team to more victories.”

Isabella Santistevan (Bigfork, Mont,) finished 10th with a 90 and Abby Gaudiant (Hudson) tie for 17th with a 95.

The Laker men had a tough time handling the tough playing conditions and tight course at Indianola, coming up short with a seventh-place finish with their highest score of the fall with a 326.

"Today was a very long day for the guys,” said Weber. “When playing in tough conditions, everything is amplified, including your frustrations. Hopefully the guys can look back on this round and learn from it, which is the goal in any round, but especially true when you do not play well."

Scott Flatebo (Jackson County Central) carded an 80, Jake Hemann (Rogers) and Ben Tibken (CAM) each shot 81, Sam Miller (Westwood) had an 82 and Dawson Weber (Martin County West) shot 83.

Both teams will play in the DMACC Fall Invite Monday at Ames Golf and Country Club. The men then will look to defend their Quad Cup title on Oct. 11 at Coldwater Golf Club in Ames, while the women are at the Grand View Fall Invite at Otter Creek Golf Club in Ankeny Oct. 19-20.
