Ihnen receives MCAC honor
ROCHESTER – Katherin Ihnen of Minnesota West has been named women's basketball Southern Division Player of the Week in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference.
A 5-foot-10 sophomore, Ihnen broke the school scoring record with 48 points in a 96-60 win over Vermilion. She was 16-for-23 from the field and 16-26 from the free-throw line and also had 18 rebounds, one assist and a blocked shot. The previous record of 46 points in existence since the 1977-78 season.
The Harris-Lake Park graduate also grabbed 18 rebounds.
Against Mesabi Range College the night before, Ihnen was 12-15 from the field and scored 26 points. She also recorded seven rebounds, two steals and an assist.
For the weekend, she was 28-38 from the floor for 73 percent.
The Lady Jays have a 5-1 record. They're on the road this weekend, playing at Itasca Friday and Northland Saturday.
Northland's Megan Swedberg was the Northern Division Player of the Week.
Earning honors for the men were Shawn Gerron of Western Technical College for the Southern Division and Demetrice Mitchell of Vermilion in the Northern Division.
