HMS Softball Wins In Walk Off
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn won an exciting 7-6 softball contest against Remsen St. Mary's in walk off fashion on Wednesday night in Hartley. St. Mary's scored one in the top of the first and HMS answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. St. Mary's would tie the game up with two more runs in the top of the third, but HMS answered with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. St. Mary’s would tie things up again in the top of the sixth and get a runner on in the top of the seventh, but they could not retake the lead. HMS got an lead off single by Suzie Castillo in the top of the seventh. Kaylen Kuchel's sacrifice bunt moved Castillo to second, and she scored off Tristan Haag's RBI single into left to end the game.
Kuchel got the win on the mound. She pitched all seven innings, giving up six runs on seven hits, striking out eight, walking one, and hitting one batter. Mindy Bethke was 3-for-3 for the Hawks with a walk and a run scored. Haag was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Kuchel was 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI. HMS is now 3-1. They play at MMC-RU on Thursday.
Haley Delperdang was the losing pitcher for St. Mary's. She gave up seven runs on 12 hits, striking out three, walking three, and hitting two batters. Catherine Russell was 2-for-4 with a RBI for the Hawks, who are 1-6.
