HMS Basketball Sweeps MMC To Finish Regular Season
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn overcame an early deficit and evened their season series with Marcus-Meridan-Cleghorn by defeating the Eagles 58-45 on Senior Night in Hartley. The Hawks trailed 17-11 after one quarter, but the Eagles' lead was cut to 1 at 26-25 by halftime. The HMS defense turned up the pressure in the second half to get some steals and fast break points. The score was tied at 39 after three quarters and the Hawks outscored the Eagles 19 to six in the final period to improve to 15-6 on the season. Regan Shockley led all scorers for the Hawks with 23 points. Kenna Rieck added 12 points while Erin Streit chipped in 11. The Hawks host Central Lyon in the opening round of Class 1A Regional play on Thursday. Hear the game on Y100. Sarah Dreckman led the Eagles with 17 points while Ashley Hurd had 14. MMC is 17-4.

HMS improved their defensive game in the second half and got the offense going too. The Hawks scored 25 points in the third quarter to go up 50-41 after three quarters. Jordan Japenga led the way for HMS with 17 points. Brian Perez had 15 points. The Hawks have set a new school record for wins this season as they are now 16-5. The previous record was 13. HMS is 10-2 in the War Eagle Conference and guaranteed at least a second place finish in the conference standings. They have drawn a bye in the first round of the Class 1A District tournament play and will face the winner of Harris-Lake Park and Remsen-Union on Thursday, February 18th.
