HMS Basketball Sweeps HLP Friday January 22nd
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn overcame a slow start and came from behind in the second half to defeat Harris-Lake Park 56-48. The Wolves led 14-8 after one quarter. The Hawks scored the first seven points of the second quarter to lead 15-14 but HLP regrouped and led 28-24 at halftime. In the third quarter, HMS got their offense going and got HLP into foul trouble to take a 39-33 lead into the final period. Turnovers were a problem for both teams. HMS had 28 in the game. HLP had 24. Regan Shockley led all scorers with 22 points for the Hawks. S he passed the 1,000 point mark in her career during the win for HMS. Kenna Rieck added 12 for the Hawks, who are now 10-5. They play at Marcus-Meridan-Cleghorn on Tuesday. Blake Gunderson paced the Wolves with nine. HLP is 7-8 and plays at Kingsley-Pierson on Monday.
A fourth quarter burst led Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn to a come from behind win over Harris-Lake Park 51-45 on Friday night. The Wolves held the Hawks scoreless the first six minutes of the game and led 12-8 after one quarter. HLP extended the lead to 25-19 at halftime. The Wolves grew their lead to seven at 35-28 after three quarters. HMS then got their offense going in the final quarter and made enough free throws down the stretch to pick up the win. The Hawks outscored the Wolves 23-10 in the final period to go to 10-3 on the year. Jordan Japenga and Owen Coburn each had 11 points in the win for HMS, who plays at Sioux Central on Monday. Jordan Kyle paced the Wolves with 16. HLP is now 7-7 and plays at Remsen St. Mary's on Tuesday. Hear the contest on Q102.
