HLP Basketball Splits With HMS (1)

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s girls remain perfect in 2015 as the Hawks beat Harris-Lake Park 53-22 on Tuesday night in Hartley. HMS’s half court defense propelled them to the win. They led 12-2 after one, 23-5 at halftime, and 41-12 after three quarters. Jaylin Rieck led all scorers for the Hawks with 14 points. She had a trio of three pointers. Regan Shockley added 12 as HMS is now 14-2. They play a non-conference game at Boyden-Hull on Thursday. Katherin Ihnen led the Wolves with 11. HLP is 5-11 and hosts Hinton on Friday.
Harris-Lake Park edged Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 81-79 in a thrilling double overtime contest in Hartley on Tuesday night. The game was close the whole way. After an early 7 point HLP lead, HMS came back to tie things at 10 after one quarter. HLP took a 31-29 lead into halftime. The Hawks went on a 10-0 and held HLP to just 7 in the third quarter to lead 44-38 going into the fourth quarter. HLP responded though and had a slim lead before HMS tied things up at 59 to force overtime. In the first overtime, HLP was up by three and had a chance to take a four point lead with a free throw. Brady Van Iperen made the free throw but saw the point erased after the official said he stepped over the line. Blake Simons then hit a three pointer at the buzzer to force a second overtime, tied at 65. Van Iperen led all scores for HLP with 28. Jordan Kyle had 21 points. Dahlton Burdorf chipped in 10 as HLP improves to 8-7. The Wolves host Hinton on Friday. Blake Simpons had 27 for HMS. Jordan Japenga drained 7 three pointers en route to a 25 point performance. Daniel Heitritter added 13 for the Hawks who are 9-6. They are at Boyden-Hull on Thursday.
