High School Basketball Returns As Okoboji Travels To George
The Okoboji Girls earned a hard fought 39-33 win at George-Little Rock on Tuesday night. Both teams had offensive rust from the Christmas Break as Okoboji took an 8-6 lead after the first quarter. The second stanza was much of the same with Okoboji opening up a 16-11 lead heading into the halftime break. The Mustangs would take a 21-19 lead late in the third quarter before freshman Magan Christopherson hit a big 3-pointer to give the Pioneers a 22-21 lead heading into the final quarter. Okoboji would never relinquish the lead in the fourth quarter, building it to 32-25 before clutch free throws by Grace Wintz and Kallyn Stumbo would ice the victory. The Pioneers were led by Christopherson’s 12 points; fellow freshman Stumbo added 10 points to go along with 8 rebounds, 8 steals and 4 assists. Camry Jones chipped in with 8 points and 6 rebounds. Emily Hansmann paced the Mustangs with 17 points. Okoboji improved to 5-4 and 3-4 in the Siouxland Conference; the Pioneers will travel to Central Lyon on Friday night.
In the boys game it was a close 16-13 George-Little Rock lead after the 1st quarter. After that it was all G-LR as they outscored Okoboji 28-10 in the 2nd quarter and never looked back after that in winning 73-47 over Okoboji. Okoboji was led by Bryce Peter with 19 points and Kip Hurd had 17. Okoboji falls to 1-7 and 1-6 in the conference and they are at Central Lyon Friday. G-LR led by Lucas Nagel with 16 and Austin Jensen with 14 as they improve to 5-4.
