Former Spirit Lake Athletes Qualify For Olympic Trials
Spirit Lake High School alumnus Will Norris, and his SLHS teammate, Alec Baldwin, both qualified for the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta. The race will be run in downtown Atlanta on Saturday, Feb. 29.
Will and Alec were both individual 2A State Cross Country Champions at SLHS, and were on the same 2A state championship Cross Country team. They both ran on the same 2011 3A state champion 4x800meter relay team, along with Keith Byers and Kayne Feldick, that shattered a decades-old record with a time of 7:49:07 that is still the 3A record.
In college, both Will and Alec were All-Americans. Will a 2x NAIA All-American at Northwestern College, and Alec a 6x NCAA D-2 All-American at Black Hills State. Both Will and Alec hold several school records at their respective schools. Alec was also a 2x All-Big 12 indoor track runner for a season at Iowa State.
After college, both Will and Alec went to Boulder, CO and ran for separate track clubs. Will has won 1st place in two half-marathons in Canada, and qualified for the Olympic trials at the Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth with a time of 2 hr, 18 min, 8 sec.
Alec qualified at the Houston Marathon with a time of 2 hr, 18 min, 32 sec.
The race will be nationally televised live on NBC from 11a-2p central time, Feb. 29.
