Mon 6-6-2016

Estherville-Lincoln Central defeated Spirit Lake 4-3 in 8 innings in a battle of two undefeated Lakes Conference Baseball teams on Monday night.  Spirit Lake took a 1-0 lead off a solo home run by Keaton Leach in the top of the second.  The Midgets tied it up in the bottom half of the inning off a hit, a walk, and an error.  ELC took the lead 2-1 in the third off a couple more hits and a hit batter and extended the lead to 3-1 in the fourth.  The score stayed that way until the top of the seventh when Spirit Lake tied it up.  Gavin Kramer and Gavin DeVos each singled with two outs and Tony Eckert hit a two RBI double to center to tie it up.  ELC got runners in scoring position in the bottom half of the inning, but could not bring the winning run across.  Spirit Lake got a two out walk by Cory Meschede in the top of eighth but failed to plate a run.  ELC won it in the bottom half of the inning.  They led the inning off with an infield single by Trey Jacobsen and Briar Rowley reach on an error that send the runners to second and third.  A ground ball gave Spirit Lake an out and the Indians opted to intentionally walk Lucas Gardner.  Jacob Bosch would end the game with a single to left, scoring Jacobsen.

Gardner started the game on the mound for ELC.  He pitched the first five and 1/3 innings, giving up one run on three hits, striking out eight, walking three, and hitting three batters.  Rowley pitched in relief for the Midgets.  He gave up two runs on three hits, striking out one, and walking one.  Jacobsen was 2-for-5 for ELC with two runs scored.  Hayden Dowding and Trevor Friesner were both 2-for-4 with a RBI for the Midgets, who are now 10-0 (2-0 Lakes).  They host Emmetsburg Wednesday.

Leach was 2-for-3 at the plate for Spirit Lake.  Houston Hawkins pitched the first three plus innings, giving up three runs on six hits, striking out three, walking two, and hitting two batters.  Gavin DeVos pitched in relief for the Indians.  He gave up one run on four hits, striking out one, walking two, and hitting one batter.  Spirit Lake is 5-1 (1-1 Lakes).  They play at home against MOC-FV on Tuesday.
