Akron-Westfield Basketball Sweeps HMS
A cold shooting night doomed Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in a 53-24 setback to Akron-Westfield on Friday Night. The Hawks went most of the first quarter without a basket and trailed 15-5 after one. A-W extended their lead to 33-13 at halftime. The third quarter started well for HMS with four straight steals but the Hawks could only covert one time. The Westerners led 48-17 entering the final quarter. A-W got 18 points from Brooke Koele off the bench and improved to 9-2. HMS was led by Erin Streit with six. The Hawks are now 5-3 and host Cherokee on Monday.
A big second half propelled Akron-Westfield to a 63-41 win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Friday night. The score was tied at 10 after one quarter. The Hawks took a 17-13 lead early in the second quarter, but the Westerners closed the quarter on a 10-0 run to lead 23-17 at halftime. HMS then went cold shooting in the third quarter. A-W got several easy baskets off of turnovers, outscoring the Hawks 23-7 to lead 46-24 entering the final quarter. Nic Jacobs led all scorers for the Westerners with 26. He had seven three pointers in the game. Cal Eskra added 16 as A-W improves to 3-7. Jake Van Dyke paced the Hawks with 13 points. HMS falls to 0-6 and hosts Cherokee on Monday.
