5th-seeded Lakers top 4th-seeded Spartans
CRESTON – Fifth-seeded Iowa Lakes went on the road and defeated fourth-seeded Southwestern 81-71 in the quarterfinals of the Region XI women's basketball tournament Wednesday night.
The Lakers had five players score in double figures, led by Shareece Smith with 23 points.
Breanna Wendland added 21 points, Safiyer Coleman 14 points, Destiny Broussard 12 and Tejah Hayden 11.
“I'm so happy for our team,” said Iowa Lakes coach Ashley Martin. “Our kids came out ready to go. I thought we guarded really well and were locked in on the defensive end. This is a huge accomplishment for our sophomore class and our program. We are looking forward to another opportunity.”
The Lakers are now 19-10 overall.
They'll play in the semifinals against top-seeded NIACC at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mason City. The Trojans defeated Little Priest Tribal College 116-36 Wednesday.
In the other semifinal, Kirkwood plays Southeastern. The winners meet at 1 p.m. Sunday for a berth in the national tournament.
