#4 Algona edges #8 Spirit Lake in district football
Algona got a touchdown with 30 seconds left in the game to get by Spirit Lake 30-24 in a battle of ranked Class 2A District 2 opponents on Friday night. The game was scoreless after the first quarter. The Bulldogs struck first with a 60 yard punt return for a touchdown by Wyatt Wegener. They missed a two point conversion to lead 6-0. That lead grew to 12-0 later in the quarter off a 30 yard touchdown catch by Skylar Groen. Again the two point conversion was no good. The Indians got an interception with 1:44 to go in the first half at the Algona 41 yard line. Three plays later, quarterback Connor Jensen ran it in from five yards out to make the score 12-7 at halftime. Spirit Lake started the third quarter with a 33 yard field goal by Ben Steffens to cut the lead to 12-10, but Algona got a three yard touchdown run by Wegener and a 41 yard touchdown catch by Wegener to extend the lead to 24-10 after three. The Bulldogs failed to convert extra points on both touchdowns which gave the Indians a chance in the fourth quarter. Joe Stein caught an eight yard touchdown pass and Gavin Harms found pay dirt from one yard out with 2:55 to go in the ballgame to tie things up at 24. Algona responded by utilizing some Spirit Lake penalties and went ahead off a four yard touchdown run by Matt Grein to stay undefeated on the season. The Bulldogs had 444 yards of offense in the game. Grein was 10-for-21 passing for 160 yards. Jacob Durant had 26 carries for 144 yards on the ground. Algona is 8-0 (4-0 District) and play at Southeast Valley for a district title next week. Spirit Lake had 343 yards of offense. Jensen was 19-for-41 passing for 227 yards. He also had 16 carries for 70 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown. Steffens was 3-for-3 on extra points with a 33 yard field goal. The Indians are 6-2 (2-2 District). They host Garner-Hayfield-Ventura next Friday to wrap up the regular season.
