Comments From Spirit Lake Okoboji Coach Dan Taylor:

The highlight of the day was definitely our doubles play.  In #1 doubles Jason and Ben played outstanding tennis all day long, not losing a set, finishing in first place, and earning first team all-lakes conference honors.  In the match against Spencer they were serving up 4-3, but had a break point against them.  It looked like Spencer had won that point after a nice drop shot, but Jason flew across the court to get it back, win the point, get it back to deuce, and they ended up winning the set without heading to a tiebreaker.  And their win against Lemars was huge, as that team was a state qualifying team last season.  Nick and Tully also played very well at #2 doubles.  They had Spencer right away in the first match of the day, and got into an early hole, and in a 5 game set there isn't much time to come back.  Their other loss was a close one to Lemars.  But they got three wins, which earned them 2nd place in their division.  Singles was pretty loaded, and both Hunter and Cal gave it their best shot.  Both of them actually played for all-conference honors in the last round against Storm Lake, but their opponents played very consistent tennis and we weren't able to pull either one of them out.  Overall the team had 11 points, tied with Spencer.  Storm Lake found their way into the 2nd place spot after going 3-1 against Spencer late in the day.  It was an extremely competitive tournament, as it always is, and our team is still playing their best tennis right now, late in the season, which is what you want.  We have 2 dual meets left before the district tournament on the 12th, and I am confident our guys are going to finish very strong.
